Our Dual Language Approach

Unlocking the Power of Bilingualism at San Diego Academy of Excellence

Learning multiple languages isn’t just a skill—it’s a gateway to sharper memory, stronger focus, better problem-solving, and enhanced multitasking. Beyond academics, it fosters empathy, cultural appreciation, and confidence, preparing our students to thrive in an interconnected world.

That’s why, since 2019, King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools has proudly offered our Dual Language Program. All TK-5th grade students at Academy of Excellence spend half their day immersed in Spanish and the other half in English, developing fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both languages. Our middle schoolers, grades 6-8, continue their language journey with dedicated Spanish classes. Teachers tailor instruction to each student’s pace, ensuring everyone grasps concepts fully and progresses confidently. We also provide extra support for students whose first language isn’t English, helping them achieve proficiency and earn ELPAC Reclassification.

Our ultimate goal? For every student to graduate with the California State Seal of Biliteracy—an achievement that opens doors to colleges and careers, celebrating their hard-earned bilingual skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will learning two languages confuse my child or slow down their academic progress?
No. Research shows that learning in two languages does not confuse students or hold back their academic growth. In fact, it often enhances cognitive skills and learning overall.

What if no one at home speaks Spanish—will that be a problem?
No. It’s important to support your child’s language development in the language spoken at home. Studies show that strong skills in a child’s first language actually help them learn additional languages more easily.

How long does it take for a child to become fluent in a second language?
Becoming fluent usually takes between 5 and 10 years, depending on exposure and practice, but every child’s journey is unique.

Welcome to San Diego Academy of Excellence, Proudly Serving Grades TK-8!

Welcome to San Diego Academy of Excellence, the home of the Cheetahs! SDAE was the first school in our organization to open its doors in 2000, and we have been empowering TK through 8th grade students ever since.

We’re thrilled to share that Academy of Excellence opened the doors to its second brand new, two-story school building for the 2026–2027 school year! This vibrant new space is designed to spark collaboration, inspire creative thinking, and provide a welcoming environment for every learner. And we’re just getting started—future phases of construction are already in motion, with plans for new green spaces, play zones, and athletic facilities. The future is bright at Excellence, and we’re proud to be building it together!

Our Dual Language Immersion program continues to thrive and pave the way for our students to achieve the California State Seal of Biliteracy, a distinguished achievement recognized by college admissions and employers.

In our pursuit of excellence, we continue to refine the different layers of universal and targeted academic and social-emotional support, while also building strong connections with students and families built from a foundation of love.

Our unique approach to learning includes:

- Dual language immersion for TK-5th grade through which 50 percent of the day is taught completely in Spanish and the other half taught in English to promote proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both languages
- Spanish instruction twice per week for 6th-8th grade
- Small class sizes to ensure that every student receives individualized support
- Embedded mental health supports and daily dynamic mindfulness practice
- Customized partnerships through our Community School model that support the whole child
- Free Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO), including competitive athletic programs, after-school clubs, before and after school programs, and academic/enrichment programs during school breaks
- Free field trips throughout the year
